Hiking Madeira in April 2026: New Rules, Reopened Trails, and Zero Stress

April is arguably the most beautiful month to visit Madeira. The wildflowers are beginning to carpet the peaks, and the air is crisp. However, if you are visiting in April 2026, the hiking landscape has changed significantly.

Between the long-awaited reopening of the PR1 Vereda do Arieiro and the new mandatory permit system, planning a hike now requires a bit more “homework.” Here is everything you need to know to stay on the right side of the rangers—and how Do You Need a Ride makes it easy.

The Big News: PR1 Pico do Arieiro is Back!

After being closed since the wildfires of 2024, the island’s most famous ridge walk is officially set to reopen to the public on 27 April 2026.

But there’s a catch: it won’t be the “free-for-all” of previous years. To protect the recovering landscape, the IFCN has introduced:

  • Timed Entry Slots: You must book a specific 30-minute window to start your hike.
  • Increased Fees: For independent hikers, the permit fee is now €10.50.
  • Strict Equipment Rules: Rangers are checking for proper footwear at the trailhead—no flip-flops allowed!

New 2026 Hiking Permits: What You Need to Know

As of this year, almost all “PR” (Recommended Path) trails require a pre-purchased online permit via the SIMplifica portal.

  • Standard PR Trails: Fees have increased to €4.50 for most levada walks, including the popular 25 Fontes (PR6) and Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8).
  • QR Codes are Mandatory: You must have your digital or printed QR code ready to show rangers at the trail entrance.

Why “Do You Need a Ride” is Your Secret Weapon

Feeling overwhelmed by portals, time slots, and mountain logistics? Let us handle the heavy lifting.

1. We Help with the “Red Tape”

When you book a hike transfer with us, we can advise you on the current permit availability. We know the system inside out and can help ensure your transport arrival matches your 30-minute entry window perfectly.

2. The “Point-to-Point” Advantage

For the newly reopened PR1, the best way to experience it is a one-way trek from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, finishing at Achada do Teixeira. Instead of hiking back to your car (an 11km round trip with brutal elevation), our driver will be waiting for you at the Teixeira car park with a bottle of water and a blast of air conditioning.

3. Real-Time Trail Updates

Is the Levada do Rei (PR18) still closed for maintenance? Has a landslide affected Caldeirão Verde? We stay updated daily so you don’t drive across the island only to find a “Closed” sign.

Don’t Forget the Flower Festival!

If you’re here in late April, the Madeira Flower Festival begins on 30 April. Funchal will be packed, and parking will be non-existent. Our Funchal city transfers and private tours allow you to enjoy the floral carpets and parades without the nightmare of city traffic.
